Dougal's Day

The great link cull has been delayed slightly, partly because I have discovered so many good Albanian links and partly because I am trying to discover Blogger hacks that will let me present them in the way I want. In the meantime, here are the deep thoughts of Dougal.

Hello, I'm Dougal and I'm a dog. I should say that 'Dougal' is what Our Man in Tirana calls me. To me I'm just me. He was out watching football last night and he hasn't recovered from that second Swedish goal, so he asked me to fill in for him today.

You'll notice that even though I'm an Albanian dog, I know English. I can't type, in case you were wondering, but I can communicate with Our Man in Tirana after he's has a few glasses of Raki.

Today I woke up early. Had to wait for my personal trainer - Our Man in Tirana - to come and open up for me and my friends, dog and other dog. When he finally dragged himself out of bed I went through my usual morning fitness regime - chase some dogs, chase a cow, catch some lizards, sniff other dogs, bark a lot.

Back to the yard when it got a little hotter for a lie down and twelve hours sleep to recharge the batteries. My domestic - Our Man in Tirana - is getting a bit slack at keeping the place clean. I may have to pee on his plants to get his attention.

My personal chef - Our Man in Tirana - brought out the biscuits this morning after we came back from the park. He's changed brand - again. These ones are small and in funny shapes. I do wish he would stick to the Friskies.

Lunchtime is approaching and chef will be bringing out food soon. Normally me, dog and other dog only eat Pedigree Chum but a few days ago he brought out some inferior cheap rubbish. I was disgusted. Still, no point letting it go to waste. We're back on the Pedigree Chum now and it had better stay that way, otherwise I might have to be sick on his welcome mat.

Later, we will go for another fitness session. I think I will probably chase some dogs, chase a cow, catch some lizards, sniff other dogs and bark a lot. I may chase a cat if there are any available.

The staff here aren't bad. He gets a bit upset just because I sometimes have a bit of a bark at two in the morning. Don't know what his problem is. But it's always good to reward him - he likes the occasional little treat. A few days ago I brought him a rat. It wasn't a big one - one bite and it was history. I did have to drag it out of the bushes and leave it somewhere obvious to make sure he would see it. But he seemed very pleased.

Well, I think that's enough for now. I can probably squeeze in another two hours of sleep before lunch. Thanks for reading.

Thanks. Kim told me about you and I read the story of your encounter on her blog too.

Dougal was back outside for a while but he is in at the moment while the dogs are being shot.

I hope as soon as it is safe he will be able to go out again, though no doubt he will be a regular visitor to us even then.

Dy Rame Per Tirane

I was watching Top Channel last night, first the news, then Fiks Fare. According to them Tirana's citizens now have a choice not only between Rama and Olldashi, but also between Rama and Rama. A minor right-wing faction, Parti 'Balli Kombetar' , submitted papers to the election authorities registering their candidate, Akile Rama. The people on Fiks Fare got hold of the papers and sent a reporter and camera team to the address listed for Mr A Rama. After much ringing of the bell the gate was reluctantly opened by a middle-aged woman who refused to speak to the reporter and tried to close the gate on her. Back in the studio Saimiri and Doctori - the two presenters of Fiks Fare - revealed that Mr Akile Rama was 73 years old, in hospital, and did not know he was now a candidate for mayor. They also compared two documents - the papers submitted on his behalf, and a genuine document he had signed. The signatures were not even remotely similar. There was an interview with the lea

Albania and the Perils of the 21st Century

Another article on religion in Albania appeared yesterday. Patrick Poole, writing in the American Thinker , argues that Saudi funding for the construction of mosques and the training of imams is a threat to Albania, since these mosques and imams reflect the fundamentalist interpretation of Islam dominant in Saudi Arabia.

Guide Turistike

According to the World Travel and Tourism Council , the future is bright for Albania. The Council ranks Albania ninth out of 174 countries for tourism growth over the next ten years. A summary of the Council's report is available, as is the full report complete with many pages of graphs, charts and spreadsheets. This summer I have seen a number of tourists on the streets of Tirana. Some of them may well be Albanian expats, or people of Albanian descent returning home to visit family, but others are genuine 'foreigners'. Judging from their appearance, they are probably best described as 'independent travellers' - the kind of people who are not interested in luxury hotels or crowded beaches. This is a good start, but independent travellers are not the kind of big spenders that the tourist industry likes. In the longer term, if Albania wants to bring in the kind of free-spending tourists who currently holiday in Croatia or Slovenia, there will have to be a huge invest
