Where Are the Orange Hordes?

I had expected that the Dutch fans would have started arriving yesterday for Holland's game against Albania tonight, so I went out to find them. All I found was a group of seven drinking Heineken (home from home) at Taiwan yesterday afternoon. I went out again last night, but if they were in Tirana they were evidently staying in their hotel bars. I'm heading out again in an hour with my camera to see if I can track a few down today.

It's too bad I arrive in Albania a week too late. I would have loved to see Holland play in Albania, especially since they're my favorite foreign team. Too bad that their fans are not roaming the streets of Tirana. And can't really blame them for drinking Heineken. Unfortunately, alcohol in Albania (other than local hard liquer of course) leaves a lot to be desired.

Korca Dark is far better than Heineken - not that you can get it in many places.

Dutch soccer fans wear the exact same color as Prague trash collectors. I thought it was some kind of trash collectors' convention when they showed up there a few years ago.

The result of the match 0-1, but it was almost 1-1. The Dutch were obviously much stronger. Still, I'm happy how the red and blacks played. It's better and better every year! =)

I was watching Top Channel last night, first the news, then Fiks Fare. According to them Tirana's citizens now have a choice not only between Rama and Olldashi, but also between Rama and Rama. A minor right-wing faction, Parti 'Balli Kombetar' , submitted papers to the election authorities registering their candidate, Akile Rama. The people on Fiks Fare got hold of the papers and sent a reporter and camera team to the address listed for Mr A Rama. Another article on religion in Albania appeared yesterday. Patrick Poole, writing in the American Thinker , argues that Saudi funding for the construction of mosques and the training of imams is a threat to Albania, since these mosques and imams reflect the fundamentalist interpretation of Islam dominant in Saudi Arabia.

Chatting with a taxi driver while back in Belfast a few months ago, he was intrigued when I told him that I was living in Albania. Did I think it was worth investing in property there, he enquired. Not unless you're prepared to risk losing your money, I replied. By the end of the journey he was considering Bulgaria instead. Despite the risks, some people are starting to invest in Albanian property. The Daily Telegraph reports on Ian Warburton who recently spent 29,000 GBP (around 40,000 EUR) on a one-bedroom apartment in a new development in Tirana. "Given its location, I don't see how it can fail to work," he said.
